Scientists Identify Parts of Brain Involved in Dreaming. - Austin Wallace

A recent study suggests new profound evidence for the nature of dreams, and exactly what processes our brains go through while dreaming. They have found, in addition to areas associated with REM activity, other areas that light up i the brain during dreaming may offer insight into what the dream is about. They have found the areas of the brain associated with facial recognition often light up when the dream consisted of other, for instance. The study also speculates the purpose of dreams being to simulate the world in order to conserve memory processing.

This can synthesize to the 1950's when mental health became a respected field of study in medicine, with the influx of people living in the us with ptsd from WWII.
