Anna Czyzewski - Facebook's Trouble with Taking Down Murder Videos

Summary: Recently, there have been a rise in gory videos posted to Facebook. In fact, this Easter Sunday, as Robert Godwin Sr. was walking home with his family, he was shot and killed, the video then being posted online. It stayed up for hours until Facebook took it down. Sources say that Facebook has thousands of people checking for inappropriate content, reviewing each flagged post within 24 hours. Mark Zuckerberg is said to be developing an AI that is better at flagging content on the site. In fact, it already "generates about one-third of all reports to the team."

Analysis: It was slightly shocking to me to know there are so many gruesome videos posted so casually on the internet so often. But since the beginning of the internet, there were always people posting disgusting and illegal things. There will always be people doing terrible things just for the fun of it. It's great that Facebook is making an intelligence system for this, however, I'm worried as to if it will be strong enough.

  1. I understand how difficult it may be to filter through billions of posts, but some things cannot be unseen.
