Summary: The 'Groveland Four' were a group of four men wrongly accused of raping a 17-year-old white girl back in 1949. They were all black males, and they were not really given a trial. The entire process was unfair, and especially during a time of segregation, they were definitely not given a fair trial. After 70 years, Florida has officially issued an apology to their families for the false accusation.
Analysis: This was written yesterday, April 19th. by CNN a trusted and unbiased newssource. I feel as though the main idea of this passage is to show how tragic this event was and how it impacted so many lives. And although it's been 70 years, it's still good for Florida to formally apologize instead of brushing it under the rug.
Synthesis: This can be synthesized to Joseph McCarthy's false accusation of Communists in America, because both were unfair and affected the lives of many in a negative way.

This is a really good synthesis. It's good that they publicly apologized like you said. It is also really sad to think about all the people who were wrongly accused in the past.
ReplyDeleteI always think it's a better idea to publicly apologize for something, even years later, rather than just leaving it to history.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad that it took this long but good they acknowledged the court's wrongful actions.
ReplyDeleteIt's kinda sad that it took this long for the issue to be reopened. However it needed to. Racism can never go unaddressed.
ReplyDeleteThis practice definitely needs to be addressed. Even now, black men are demonized. The Groveland Four were far from the only black men (or boys) to be wrongly accused of raping or otherwise assaulting a white woman. Think back to last school year's production of Blues for Mr. Charlie. Think about Emmit Till. About the black men recently shot by police for "looking threatening." This needs to stop; this needs to be recognized.
ReplyDeleteI think this was a really impressive move on Florida's part after so much time has passed.
