Summary: In this season of high school prom, many teens always go on a search for the perfect dress while this girl chose to rather send a message through her dress. 17 year-old Florida teen Milan Bolden-Morris got a custom dress made for her prom that features the faces of victims of police brutality. The teen used her platform on social media to make the statement while adding "Yes, I'm black. Yes, I'm 17. Yes, GOD is using me to convey a message that is bigger than me."
The teen later responded in a interview that she was overwhelmed by the response she has gotten and that it was mostly positive.
Synthesis: This event has been done in the light of the police brutality and hate crimes that have recently been more and more exposed in our country. It is like when Martin Luther King Jr. organized the march on Washington to protest inequality for Black people. Though some may not consider this as epic an event, this is definitely was the effect of people using their platform of popularity to make a push for change for equality.
That was a really brave movement by this student.
ReplyDeleteI agree and it's really cool to see teens using their platforms in this way.
ReplyDeleteI really do like the fact that high school kids are taking a stand in creative ways on the injustice in our country.
