Summary: A new ad released by Pepsi this past week brought a lot of controversy to the media. They used the imagery of protest to market the soda company, but what they intended to project unity and peace, became a serious issue in specifically the black society. The company used Kendall Jenner in the commercial taking a photo shoot and then walks up and offers a pepsi to a police officer who is trying to control a protest by blacks. Pepsi “was accused of appropriating the Black Lives Matter movement and using social justice to sell soda.” A daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. commented on the ad saying, “If only Daddy would have known about the power of #Pepsi.” Pepsi removed the ad and apologized for any issues it brought.
Analysis: Since there was much controversy about this ad, it’s significant to the society and how the past still continues to influence feelings about our nation’s diversity. It’s sad that these issue still exist, but I hope their feelings will resolve. When the Civil Rights Movement was happening in the 60s, people felt the same tension that was felt when this ad was released.
