Kyla Thomas- Girl, 2, defends her choice of doll to cashier

Summary: This article is about a little 2 year old girl who received a special gift for successfully being potty trained. When 2 year old Sophia was told that she would be able to pick the toy of her choice, she knew just what she wanted. In the store, she kept going back to the doctor doll because in her mind she was a doctor; however, the doctor was black. When Sophia and her mother went to the cash register to check out, the cashier wanted to know why Sophia didn't want a doll that looked like her, yet the answer was simple. The girl's responded with, "She does (look like me)! She's a doctor; I'm a doctor. She is a pretty girl; I am a pretty girl. See her pretty hair? See her stethoscope?" To Sophia, she and the doll shared the same aspirations and that's all that mattered.

Analysis: This little girl is the model of what a whole lot of older people should be. This little girl recognized the beauty of the black doll and she wasn't ashamed of it. She genuinely did not see color. When most people say that they don't see color, most of the time, it is a cover- up for what they really feel. This childlike innocence is what should everyone should have. In relation to history, there has been a pattern of discrimination based on color. The Little Rock Nine is an example of discrimination in the education system for example.
