Ireland has recently voted a staggering "yes" for the legalization of gay marriage. This has historically changed the stereotypical Catholic, conservative, and "out of touch" way of thinking that has been affiliated with Ireland. Popular newspapers and important figures such as Panti Bliss, Ireland's infamous drag queen, have accounted for this historic breakthrough by showing that this is a step toward the establishment of a new and improved Ireland. History has shown through the Catholic Church that being gay is sinful behavior and ultimately punishable by death. These laws allowing this type of cruel punishment are demonstrated the great influence of religion on politics.
The legalization of gay marriage in Ireland should be a symbol of hope for a more open America. To this day we have not, as a nation, fully legalized gay marriage and accepted it into our society. A majority of states such as New York, California, Florida, Colorado, etc. have legalized it but we still have states such as Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, and North Dakota who have not legalized it completely. America should look at Ireland, a much more conservative nation who do not have as much liberal influence as the U.S., and realize that the legalization of gay marriage is a way of the future. The ignorance of our history should no longer influence our decisions of a better tomorrow.

This is a very big accomplishment for Ireland. I do hope that other countries can see the progress that Ireland made, and I hope we can change the world into a more accepting place.
