On Sunday, Yellowstone National Park was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 which is the highest it's been since 1980. The park sits on top of a super volcano, which lies beneath the surface and is now known to be 2.5 times greater than previously thought. Researchers say that the seismic activity won't result in an eruption for millions of years, and that the earthquakes are merely the uplift of molten rock under the earths surface. No reports of injury have been made yet.
I didn't even realize that Yellowstone was sitting on top of a volcano! In the article it also talks about how the last time the volcano erupted it covered half of North America with ash so that's a little bit concerning. I'm banking on the fact that the scientists actually know what they're talking about when they say it won't erupt for a while! I'm also glad that no one was hurt as a result of these quakes.

I didn't know that either! It's very good that no one was hurt. Hopefully they can maintain this in the future!

This is so interesting! Who knew there as a volcano under Yellowstone park
ReplyDeleteAhh we used to watch videos and films all the time about Yellowstone, I almost forgotten all about it. It used to freak me out watching them saying that it could potentially wipe out all of North American with one eruption, the effects could be extremely dangerous!
