Why some schools are ditching report cards Arlesia McGowan Period 4

Some schools are turning away from report cards that focus on letters grades with little room for detailed feedback.Date written: April 7, 2014

So get ready for this...But it's not as interesting as you will really expect it to be...schools aren't necessarily "ditching" report cards per say but they are changing the traditional report cards. Instead of letters and numbers or letters, some focus on detailed feedback, communication. Surrey school district Superintendent Jordan Tinney says that, "We're trying to boil it down to what do parents really want to know". Some parents find changes confusing, while others like the more detailed insight, focusing more on achievement than behavior.
I found this interesting partially because I have never encountered a current even on report cards, but I do most certainly agree that report cards do need to change when it comes to an achievement aspect. What do ya'll think? I think that report have actually downsized and arent really that big of deal anymore but maybe thats because we are in highschool.

  1. I find this really interesting. I think major school reforms are needed, and I think that this is a good start.

  2. I remember seeing my report card in 2nd grade when I went to an academy, and I noticed that it wasn't a basic report card with numbers (it still had my grades), but it had my performance as a student in the classroom such as participation, behavior, interest in class, etc. but this is how I think the report card should be structured for schools (primarily elementary through middle school).

  3. Personally I find report cards necessary. But I also agree with Ashley. I mean, as long as kids know their grades.

  4. With colleges and private schools getting as competitive and particular as they are, it may be a good idea to simplify things to put things back into perspective. Kids try and work so hard and end up empty handed sometimes so to eliminate some of the pressure and countless hours that go into schools, this might be a good idea.

This is a good idea for elementary student report cards as it is important for parents of young children to know how well their child behaves in classroom, reading level, etc. Middle and high school report cards should stay as they are.
