Two Gonzaga University students could be suspended or even expelled after using a handgun to defend themselves from an intruder in their apartment, that happens to be on the university's property. The university says that this violates the school's weapons policy by having firearms in their apartment, which is in a complex near the campus. Students Erik Fagan and Daniel McIntosh were in their apartment when a stranger knocked on the door, said he'd just gotten out of jail, and asked for $15. The student offered the man a blanket and a can of food, but "didn't feel comfortable" giving the man money. When he didn't receive the money, the homeless man started breaking his way into the apartment. The second roommate rushed to the door with a handgun and the man ran away. A short while after the incident, police captured the man, whom they identified as a six-time convicted felon. In a board hearing on Friday, the board found the 2 students guilty of two infractions: possessing weapons on school grounds and putting others in danger by the use of weapons.
I think that both of these students had the right to protect themselves. They obviously used the weapons very responsibly and who knows, maybe if they didn't threaten to use the gun on the intruder the 2 students could have been killed. As long as the have a legitimate reason and use them responsibly, I think that college students should be allowed to keep weapons in safe locations in thei apartment. If they misuse them, thats their fault, but until then they should have the 'right to keep and bear arms'

I agree, expulsion is kind of excessive the two boys were simply trying to protect themselves. They used the weapon extremely carefully, I actually applaud them for their responsibility.
ReplyDeleteDue to the recent shootings that have occurred throughout the U.S., especially those in Universities or schools, rules/ security regarding guns has become extremely strict. One of the consequences of the large amount of shootings that occur in the U.S. is the panic that they cause. People will do everything to prevent the occurrence of a shooting. While these two students were using their firearm for self defense, the colleges reaction is understandable.
