Over 1500 works of art like Chagall, Monet and Picasso were kept hidden by the Nazis and have just resurfaced over 70 years of hiding. All of these paintings, worth over $1 billion total, were found in the spring of 2011 in a raid on an apartment in Munich. However, this just became public knowledge after a German magazine, Focus, published this astonishing story.

Works including "Modernist masters" includes pieces from artists like Ernst Kirchner and Max Beckmann resurfaced as well- many believed these were destroyed during World War 2. During the 1930's and 40's Nazis would label certain art pieces 'degenerate' and would loot the art from private collections, galleries, and even museums. Although this may just be a drop in the ocean to the many still unrecorded stolen paintings, this is a huge shock to the art world.

It is amazing to me how something like this can be hidden for such a long time and then suddenly resurface. I believe that this will change the art world dramatically, as well as history.

  2. How interesting! I never knew that the Nazis went after art. I think it's fascinating that there's so much artwork out there that no-one even knows about because it's been hidden for whatever reasons. Hopefully people will continue to make more discoveries like this in the future.
