The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management authority recently lifted the ban on hunting buffalos using bows to increase revenue from tourism. The money raised from tourist hunting activities will allegedly go to conservation funds. Hunting is heavily regulated within the region, however, and authorities can issue hunting permits to the tourists for bow use on safaris, or gun use on private land. Permits can also be issued to safari operators in order to further regulate the hunting activities. According to conservationists, the lift of this ban can help with wildlife recovery efforts in South Africa.
Hunting is a very controversial issue in today's society, mainly due to the decreasing populations of millions of species around the world. The lift on the ban sparked prior feelings for the death of Cecil the lion, who died due to a tourist shooting him with a bow and arrow outside of the property meant for hunting. As long as the amount of hunting done is heavily regulated by the region, no major damage to the species' population should be harmed according to experts.
