Lily Philips- New Addition to SAT

College Board has recently announced a change to the SAT test. They are now including a section to reflect on the test taker’s background, including neighborhood, household income, etc. The answers will result in a number ratings which will also be sent to colleges that tell about the “challenges they have overcome in life.” All of the questions will not include anything about race or ethnicity; however, they believe this will still help to diversify college campuses.
This article was written by Anemona Hartocollis and Amy Harmon which was published in The New York Times on May 17, 2019. The audience of the article are the high school students who are preparing for the SAT test that they take in their Junior year of high school. This informs the teens of the latest addition to the test so they know about what to expect and why it was put in place. I believe this is a good idea to balance out the backgrounds people come from and give the people without the opportunity the ability to succeed at universities. This reminds me of the Little Rock Nine in 1957 who were 9 African American who attended Little Rock Central High School after public school segregation was ruled unconstitutional. This was the process where integration of schools started which was a very positive movement for African American civil rights.
