Although by far the most talked about story of the week by far was the trend towards the criminalization of abortion, most notably Alabama, I elected for a story a little closer to home, taking place in Dallas. Transgender people, particularly trans women of color are at a far higher rate of violence than their cisgender peers. In relation to that, a trans woman in Dallas a few months ago was the victim of a brutal assault. A few days ago she was found dead. Police have said they believe the two incidents to be unrelated although the perpetrator of the previous attack has been released from jail. This attack is sickeningly familiar to me, something I've been forced to come to expect from the world in which we live. This reminds me of about a million other incidents nearly identical to this one. Given the topic of my review project, I am well acquainted with this. For just one example, consider the fate of Venus, depicted in the documentary Paris is Burning. She was a trans woman of color and strangled, likely by a client.
