This article was written by author Julla Hollingsworth and published on may 17, 2019. Lawmakers in Taiwan have legalized same-sex marriages. This vote came two years after the court ruled that heterosexual marriage is unconstitutional. This bill approving homosexual marriage will be put into effect on May 24. This topic has divided the Taiwanese community although this island has the largest gay community and this biggest gay pride parades. The Cabinet Bill has been backed up by LGBTQ communities hence it's the only bill that has used the word "marriage." A 33 year old gay artist has referred to the fact that mainland China hasn't legalized same-sex marriage. This bill shows that Chinese culture can be "open, diverse and progressive."
More than 2 dozen countries in the world has legalized homosexual marriage. LGBTQ rights in Asia have came a long way. In November, an author of same-sex erotic fiction was sent to jail for a decade. In April, the ruler of Brunei stated he would introduce death by stoning those convicted of gay sex. Last year in Indonesia, two men accused of being gay received 87 lashes for gay sex in the country's conservative Aceh province.
The Stonewall Riots marked the beginning of a political movement for gay rights during a time when it was illegal to have homosexual sex in all states except for Illinois. Gay-rights activism in the 1970s focused more on personal liberation and visibility than on gaining access to institutions such as marriage. On Dec. 20, 1999, the Vermont Supreme Court ruled unanimously in Baker v. Vermont that same-sex couples were entitled to the same rights, protections, and benefits as heterosexual couples. Before 2004, four states had banned gay marriages. Despite all of these laws being amended to protect gay marriage, there's still debates an sparked conspiracies about whether or not a couple should be happily married. I believe homosexuals couples should have the same rights as heterosexual couples.
hey we're making improvements! but let's not forget that equality does not just mean the right to marry. there are still kids who get kicked out of their houses every day for being who they are. I hope that the community continues to gather support until we can all be safe and happy
