A flamingo within the Miller Park Zoo in Illinois had to be euthanized after an elementary school student threw a rock into the exhibit. The rock thrown broke the flamingo's legs and caused multiple other injuries that led to the decision of putting it out of its misery. The zoo staff are currently working with the child's family to make this into a learning experience to prevent future accidents towards more animals.
Zoo exhibits and enclosures are meant to provide as much comfort and safety to each animal as if they were to remain in their natural habitat. The amount of animals put down due to children accidently falling into the enclosure, or harming the animal with rocks or other heavy objects shouldn't continue to increase. The animals that had to be put down in the past, along with this flamingo, have not caused any harm towards the children, but had to suffer and pay with their lives. This event reminds me of the tragic euthanization of Harambe the gorilla, who had to be put down after a child fell into its enclosure. The zoo animals already had to suffer enough being taken away from their homes to be put in a zoo, the least we could do is to teach our youth to respect their enclosures and not have them killed.
