Isadora Lilly- Helium shortage

A global helium shortage has Party City recently having announced that they will be shutting down 45 stores this year and that they are working to secure a new helium source and contract. This shortage is also said to potentially affect other products it is used for, such as in deep sea diving, airbags, cryogenics, rocket fuel, MRI machines, and in areas of tech including fiber optics and semiconductors.

This reminds me of the 2016 Southeastern United States gasoline shortage, which had families racing to gas stations to get their tanks filled. It is evident that these non-renewable resources which we depend upon are not going to last forever, so it is either time to limit their usage or begin thinking of alternative sources essential to human life now.

  1. I remember a helium shortage we had in the past like it was yesterday. Picture me at Central Market with my mom, excited as heck, wondering if I would get a purple or green balloon this time. I skip into the entrance area, eyes wide, before I realize there are NO BALLOONS. My toddler-lookin’ self thought, “They had the AuDaCiTy to get rid of the balloons??!” I stomped over to the counter, stared the cashier in the soul, and said, “I want to speak to your manager.” He, clearly confused as to why a young child was asking to speak to the manager, suddenly came to the realization that there were no balloons. “Sorry,” he said, monotoned, “there’s been a shortage of helium so we have no more balloons.” My world came crashing down, my life flashed before my eyes. That was the story time of the worst day of my life.

  2. I wonder what is causing this helium shortage. I didn't know helium is so important to Party City, I mean they do sell other stuff

  3. I agree with you. We really need to acknowledge that we will not have access to these types of resources forever, so we need to find an alternate method to get these things done. Instead of companies trying to ease up on the use of non-renewable resources, they focus on the economic gain from the extraction of these materials. Lily Philips
