This week, officials of the United Methodist Church voted on whether same sex marriages would be permitted. This is something that I actually know alot about, so apologies if this article-blogspot-thingy is a little bit disjointed, as I’m just putting it how I know rather than reading off an article. Basically, the church voted no for a few reasons in a scathingly close 53-47 percent race. There were two plans proposed: the traditionalist (no same sex marriages whatsoever or LGBTQ people in the clergy) or the One Church Plan (allows churches to chose on an individual level). Since the conference was held with members from all over the globe, there was more support for the traditional plan, as many (particularly African) delegates tended to be more conservative. While almost 75% of churches in the U.S. supported the One Church Plan, an overwhelming 93% of Africans supported the Traditionalist saying that if we adopted the one church plan, we would be the “laughingstock” of African religion. Now, churches have a few options: a)branch off from the Methodist church and create a new branch that is more progressive thinking and accepting (however, this is difficult do to monetary issues), b) wait it out and wait for change, c)continue practicing same sex marriages or d)refuse to pay their dues to the church until change is invoked.
(Sorry if this is poorly written, I had to do it on my phone because my laptop is broken๐)
It is so sad that an institution devoted to passing on the word of a higher power is so concerned with their own appearance that they are willing to deny equal rights to those who wish to share in their love of a higher power. An organization preaching love turned to a mindset of hate.
ReplyDeleteI think that the lgbtq ๐ณ️๐ community deserves equal rights as the defaulted straight people because at the end of the day they are humans just like we are.
