An HIV positive man in England is the second known adult to be cured of the AIDS virus through a bone marrow transplant. After three years of the very experimental treatment, there is no trace of the virus. This patient shows that AIDS could someday be fully cured, but right now it is to early too say. The donor must have the mutation that fights the infection, and also be a perfect genetic match to the patient. The virus has killed over 35 million people since it started in the 1980s.
The article is hopeful for the future, while still being realistic about the situation. The disease has been an issue that has been prevalent for nearly 40 years, so hopefully the cure will be found soon.
We have been learning about the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. It had such a horrible effect on the gay community, so hopefully this part of our history will soon be coming to an end.
