Lesly Marquez- Some states allow parents to get out of vaccinations

Summary:

This article basically informs us that 47 states started to allow parents to get out of vaccinations if they had religious beliefs against immunization, and out of those 47 there was also 18 states that also allowed parents to get out of vaccinations if they had personal, moral, or philosophical beliefs against immunization. Not only did this confused a few people and scientists but it also caused a lot of bad measles outbreaks that could've been avoided if they never allowed people to opt vaccinations. Children were getting bad deceases that again could've been avoided with the help of a vaccinations. A lot of Dr's believed it was a no brainer and people should take the vaccinations and that there should be no reason to opt this.

Analysis:

This kinda reminds me of the Black Death when many people were dying due to a disease that was going around. In my opinion I agree withe the Dr's  that people should keep getting vaccinations because it does prevent a lot from happening to us and others.

Jordan Gillette- Police arrest man suspected of killing 5 people in Louisiana

Summary: On Saturday, January 26th, 2019, 21-year-old Dakota Theriot shot and killed his parents, his girlfriend, his girlfriend's father, and his girlfriend's brother around Baton Rogue, Louisiana. He was found Sunday at his grandmother's house after she had contacted the police when she heard that Theriot was coming.  Theriot had a history of violence and drug abuse, and was recently kicked out of his own home by his father, Keith Theriot. In the past few months Theriot had been making eerie posts on twitter, one tweet stating he wished he could "just clear my mind for one day." Dakota Theriot is facing charges of first degree murder, illegal use of a weapon and home invasion.

Analysis: Truth be told, this is sickening. How can anyone have the nerve to kill their own parents, or anyone for that matter? I don't have much more to say on the subject, and I just pray for Theriot's extended family and his girlfriend, 20-year-old Summer Ernest's family. Before reading this article I hadn't heard anything about these murders. This article was written by the writing team at BBC (the names weren't listed), and this article was written as a way to expose the dangers of ignoring the subtle details woven into mental health issues. This can be related to the triple homicide caused by Grant Amato, where he murdered his parents and brother in Florida.

Way too Cold

As temperatures in Midwestern cities plunged to levels colder than parts of Antarctica, so cold that officials warned people not to step outside even for a few minutes, Tony Neeley stood on a downtown Chicago street corner Tuesday, wearing wet sneakers and clutching a hand warmer packet in each of his bare hands. He had already been there for hours. "I'm cold and i'm afraid" Neeley said. He was out trying to get money for a motel room, around 45 dollars so he could be warm for at least one night. He said that he doesn't want to go to a shelter because of the bedbugs and stealing.-Khai

Minnesota man arrested after wife reportedly found dead in home- Yesenia Ramirez

Duane Johnson age of 58 called 911 last week on Thursday morning reporting that his wife had died. When the authorities arrived they saw him naked who then ran upstairs to take a shower whit a mix of bleach. The sheriff then checked the house and found 47 guns and drug medication to treat his narcolepsy and stolen property. They then arrested him for stealing property and for knowing that his wife had health issues and not taking proper care of her. They had also found out that he had been feeding his wife snowballs before she died to keep her hydrated  and records show that Johnson is in bail for $250,000.

This article was published by Nicole Darrah on January the 29, 2019 for the purpose of informing citizens of this current event. My point of view in this article is that if Johnson had suffered mental illness problems and had issues with authorities why wasn't he arrested before? or taken into a hospital?. Although he seemed like a bad guy we can tell he tried helping his wife in some sort of way. This reminds me of similar event in U.S. History in 1828 on when Andrew Jackson wife Rachel died of a heart attack after surviving a brutal campaign that ruined her reputation. Jackson then told every one who attacked this wife that he would never forgive them because they killed the woman he loved for 4 decades.

No charges filed in deaths of 3 Florida children found ‘trapped inside’ of a freezer: authorities- Yesenia Ramirez

Early on this month 3 kids of the age of 6,4 and 19 months died because they where trapped inside a freezer. The cause of this death was taken into investigation, but their were no results of intoxication or drugs: however, the test results showed that they died due to a lack of oxygen. The authorities theory of this tragedy is that the kids might have been playing outside and hidden in the freezer and when the lid close shut they weren't able to open it from the inside . Authorities then questioned their guardians who were their grandma and mother of why were they left alone outside without no supervision. Their guardians said that they were watching them, but only for a brief moment and then left, but as time passed by they noticed that they weren't back, so they went out looking for them and that's when they found them dead.

This article was published by Elizabeth Zwirz on January the 29,2019 with the purpose of informing citizens of the current tragedy and it was mostly directed towards parents. My point of view about this article is that parents should never leave their kids unsupervised and specially at a young age because you never know what could happen. Another thing is that i'm not sure if the guardians should be charged because partially it was their fault, but we might also not know the whole story. This reminds me to U.S History on when a famous a Africa American freed slave had 3 children and all 3 died due to poverty. Her name was Philis Wheatly who published her first poem in 1767 and her first volume of verse, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, in 1773.

A Florida man found a grenade while fishing and then took the explosive to Taco Bell - Joziah German

On Saturday, a Florida man discovered an explosive while magnet fishing. The fisherman pulled up a World War ll hand grenade, while using the magnet to search the water for collectible items. This happened, according to police in Ocala, Florida, about 80 miles northwest of Orlando. The fisherman, then decided to throw the grenade in his truck and take it to Taco Bell where he called the police. The Taco Bell was evacuated, police said, but was reopened later that day. A bomb squad had to come in and remove the device, and they did so without incident.

This article published by Amir Vera and Shawn Nottingham was published just a couple days after police released what the bomb really was. I had no prior knowledge to this, but I thought it was really interesting, and I normally do only intense articles, so thought I should try something new. This story reminds me of a story my dance friend from Canada told me about a bomb close to his house. A bombing occurred at the Hurontario and Eglinton Bombay Bhel restaurant in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The reason I connected these two is because they both were restaurants who had bombs brought into it for some unknown reasons. Just goes to show how much help some people need who live in our country, they walked into a busy restaurant, with innocent people, holding a bomb that wasn’t theirs. The audience is honestly for anyone who stubbles upon this article like I did, and were interested, or those that were seeing this article to try to get information from that day to know if it was a bomb. The purpose of this article, in my opinion, was to show Americans how a man walked into a family fast food chain, holding a bomb, and then called police. What was he actually thinking in that case. Just makes me wonder if humans would end up taking ourselves off the planet. This article is also significant and important to us, the reader, for that man could have been anywhere else in the US, and walked in with a bomb while we were eating our food.

Sophia Zhukova - A steam of diesel fuel and steel dust: what the passengers of the subway in New York breathe

The air in the New York subway is so polluted with diesel fumes, which are used by MTA diesel locomotives, which is fraught with serious diseases, doctors warn.
Because of the old trains, the concentration of diesel fumes on subway platforms is twice as high as on the streets of the Big Apple, said George Thurston, a professor at the New York University School of Medicine (NYU School of Medicine). According to former machinist Eric Legel, "this is the same as putting the head under the exhaust pipe of a car." For the past few weeks, L line train passengers have been feeling unwell due to an unpleasant odor, and some MTA employees have even been hospitalized. According to the MTA, the source of the smell could be an old tank gas station, working next to the line in East Williamsberg.
Some metro staff are already turning to doctors with asthma.
Despite all New Yorkers 'discontent and scientists' concerns, Shems Tarek assured: “The MTA has air quality control devices in the metro, and any reports of significant pollution are immediately investigated. The safety of customers and employees is our number one priority. ”

I always new that subway stations at New York are not in the best condition. Everyone who at least once could have a chance to go to NY went on a subway, and everyone always said how bad it is. Probably it is even the dirtiest metro in the whole world. But I always wanted to look at it anyway. But now, when I hear that it can be dangerous for my health I don't want to go there anymore. I searched up some more articles about danger of New York's metro, and it scared me that they have this problem for a long long time, but nobody never really did anything. Hopefully it'll change and I'll go out from the New York's subway alive

Alex Carrington- Julian Castro and Teddy Roosevelt's Major Plans

Presidential contender Julián Castro's message in Dallas: I'd get things done

With all the potential candidates gearing up for the 2020 election Presidential contender, Julian Castro’s message of “I’d get things done” remind me of President Theodore Roosevelt’s big stick policy.  It is a sad time in America’s politics that in 12 years we have gone from the message of hope in the 2008 campaign of Barack Obama to today.

How Will Puerto Rico Spend Its $20 Billion -Cleo Chaney

Original article: https://www.npr.org/2019/01/28/688700947/puerto-ricans-concerned-that-20-billion-recovery-plan-is-not-for-the-people

The damage from Hurricane Maria still remains in Puerto Rico, and there are many different opinions on how to deal with repairing the infrastructure on the island. With the $20 billion from the federal government, the Puerto Rican government finally sees a chance to make much needed improvements that, being billions in debt, were before impossible. One of the main focuses of Puerto Ricans is fixing housing. However, there is concern that the money will not be spent in the most beneficial way for the people, so many are organizing to try and have a say in how the funds are used.

After the hurricane in 2017, many of the issues regarding Puerto Rico were brought up. Some view the way the US treats it’s territory as unjust; they believe it should either be made a state or given freedom. Puerto Ricans are without some of the rights of being a US citizen but still have to answer to the federal government. This makes me think of American Imperialism in the late 1800s and early 1900s and the controversy that surrounded it.

"Here Are All The Fox News Shows Ocasio-Cortez Refuses To Go On" -- Youssef Bakr

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, arguably the most predominant raving lunatic of the DNC today, has refused to appear on shows where she just might have to face challenging questions. Many of these shows, including "Tucker Carlson Tonight" and "Hannity" are aired on FOX News, one of the biggest and most popular news broadcasting companies in America. She has appeared numerous times on MSNBC, where blatant falsehoods have been made with no pushback or fact checks (the author of the article, Ryan Saavedra, lists many examples). Left-leaning news channels broadcast Ocasio-Cortez's madness all across the country, deliberately allowing the public to be lied to. Speaking of crazy politicians, Andrew Jackson was one of them. And lies in journalism relates back to the yellow journalism of the Gilded Age.

4 Houston police officers shot while serving warrant - Daniela Rodriguez

4 Houston police officers shot while serving warrant

Monday afternoon, a group of about a dozen officers responded to a warrant about narcotics in a home in Houston. Upon entry to the home, four officers were shot and one suffered a knee injury. The two suspects were killed on the scene, and two of these officers are now in critical condition. This serves as a reminder of the regretful unity of gun violence and the drug war and conveys the bravery the officers have in facing these calls.

Flu Season- Mia Murphy

On January 10, the CDC announced that up to 84,000 people have been hospitalized for the flu in the past three months. There were over 900,000 hospitalizations and 80,000 deaths during the 2017-2018 flu season, the highest the CDC has seen in a decade. Over 6 million people total have contracted the flu over the last few months. The flu epidemic is a parallel to the plague which was the cause of death for many people in the early settlement times. It is very concerning how high the death number is for the United States due to the flu. There isn't much that us teenagers can do to help contribute to the problem, but there is always something or little things that we can do.

The New York Times posted an article regarding the government shutdown and how it is affecting people in every state. Federal workers make up 1.5 percent of the workforce, and this has been the longest government shutdown in history. There was a story about a woman who had to choose between paying her rent and her kemo , and a man saw the story and paid for both her rent and her cancer treatment. Everyone around the world has chipped in to help those in dire need, and it is truly unifying us as a country against one force, our awful president (sorry not sorry). This reminds me of when all of the U.S united against Britain for being an unfair leader and causing them hardships, and while not everyone is against Trump, its not far from the truth. Hopefully we can alll unite and get him impeached.

Four Officers Shot While Serving Warrant- adriana chavez

https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/28/us/houston-officers-shot/index.html

A report was made by some concerned neighbors with suspicions that drugs were being sold at a specific residence in Houston. In response, dozens of narcotic and patrol officers arrived at the scene and breached their way to the door while announcing themselves. However, in a shocking turn of events, gunfire rang from the house aimed towards the officers from two suspects waiting within. Four officers were struck, and the rest of the crew returned fire, killing the two suspects within the house. The injured officers are believed to be in critical but in stable condition at the hospital.

This article and event occurred today and was recently updated a little less than half an hour prior to when I came across it. It was published by CNN and written by Jason Morris. I had no prior knowledge to this event. This topic is honestly not even a surprise at this point. So many gun fights and lives are taken each day due to firearms and its proven it can happen anywhere, by anyone. I feel that these types of situations should and could be handled in a much less violent matter from any side of the situation. The officers made themselves known to the suspects, who then took that to their advantage to open fire towards them. What will it take to get the government to finally realize how severe of a problem this is and how much bigger it can get if we don't extinguish this flame already.

Houston police: 5 officers hut in shooting, 2 suspect dead

There were 2 suspects that are died after a shooting on Monday that injured 5 Houston police officers. The police officers were hit by a gunfire when they tried to serve a search warrant at a home where they got a tip from a neighbor saying that black tar heroin was being sold from the house. There were about 12 officers with the Houston Police Department's narcotics unit that was present during this time. All of the officers that were injured were taken to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston, and 2 of them transported by a helicopter.

Analysis: This article was written on January 28,2019. I believe this article was written to inform people about the situation that happened. It shows that police officers put there life in danger everyday for justice. This article relates to history because guns are a primal danger in the United States. In 2010, guns were used in 11,078 homicides, compromising almost 35% of all gun deaths, and over 68% of all homicides. This show from 9 years ago this was a huge issue. We as a whole have to do something about guns.

Bachelor Recap: Zoe Williams

On tonight's episode of The Bachelor, they were in Singapore.  During a shopping date the bachelor was talking to one of the front-runners of the show and she decided it was necessary for her to share her experience with being sexually assaulted.  She was taken advantage of while incapacitated and used to be uncomfortable with even the slightest touch.  The bachelor responded by expressing that his ex also had an experience with sexual assault and that meant he was aware of how a relationship, under those circumstances, can be different.  After this, the show gave a number to call if you or anyone you know had been sexually assaulted.

The article was mostly centered on a recap of the show so the audience was most likely people who watch the show, but didn't have time to watch the episode.  The writer is very biased not in favor of the show.  They constantly make fun of it and criticize it while restating the gist of what happened this week.  Although this probably seems like a silly article to write about, I think it's important to find the value in it.  While this reality TV show is largely staged for the enjoyment of the viewers, the show is doing something very powerful with the platform that they have created.  Instead of letting it be complete mindless nonsense, they are speaking out about a large scale epidemic that America has taken part in.  This can be related to perhaps the most famous sexual harassment case between Anita Hill andSupreme Court Nominee Clearance Thomas in 1991.

Daviah harrison-A Duke professor warned Chinese students to speak English

This article was written by Harmeet Kaur on Monday 28, 2019 and it brings up the email that was written by a Duke University professor who warned Chinese students about speaking their native language in student lounge and study areas. The professor wanted the Chinese students to speak English 100% of the time in order to improve their English and said that it would lower their chances of a job opportunity if they continued to speak in the Chinese language. Mary Klotman, the dean of the university's School of Medicine, apologized for the email that was sent out and reminded them that there was no limitation or restriction of the language that is used to converse and communicate. Also, she reassured them that their career opportunities would not be affected by the language used outside of the classroom.

I immediately related this story to the Indians (or other races/ethnicities) when they were forced to assimilate to the American way of things like speaking and dressing like Americans. I am glad that they quickly straightened this situation out but I hate that this was even a problem. However, I kind of understand why they would want them to speak English since it is probably a requirement for most jobs in America. I do think that when  Chinese people(or any foreigner) is talking to someone who speaks the same language, they will tend to go to what they are comfortable with. To me, this is like if my Spanish teacher told me to speak 100% Spanish outside of school and that would not be easy or comfortable to do especially if I am talking to someone whose first language is also English.

Trump signs bill to reopen government for 3 weeks - Mary Kate Madden

https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-expected-float-deal-end-shutdown-now-border/story?id=60622221

This article describes how this government shutdown, which is the longest in history, is over. Trump signed a spending bill that did not include the money he wanted in funding for the wall. However, this bill is only good for three weeks and he's hoping to come up with a plan for how to pay for the wall. Also, the estimated 800,000 federal employees who haven't been working. The economy is expected to have lost at least $6 billion during this shutdown.

This shutdown had a big impact on the country. It's causing lawmakers to take a closer look at the laws that made this possible in the first place. However, until Congress and the White House can agree on a plan, this could happen again soon. This reminds me of the problems with Bill Clinton's government shutdown, which lasted 21 days.

Avery Corley: Is Mueller's investigation coming to a close?

On this past Monday, the head of the justice department said that he believed special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian investigation might be nearing an end. Even though the comment on the investigation was brief and filled with unanswered questions, acting attorney general Matthew G. Walker's statement was the closest thing that the public has received on when a conclusion might be met. With just another one of Trumps known associates (Rodger Stone) being charged with possible cullusion with Russia, false statements, and witness tampering I am excited to see the results of the investigation...That is... if we can see it at al! William P. Barr who is being nominated  for the position of attorney general alluded to the fact that Mueller's investigation has the possibility of staying out of the publics eye.

This reminds me of Woodrow Wilson's idea of New Freedom which believed in getting rid of all the trusts and monopolies that was terrorizing the people and small business of the time. Woodrow Wilson was exposing and getting rid of the bad and corrupt, hopefully like Robert Muller's investigation will.

Anna Speer-Trump recognizes a new Venezuelan leader

Last Wednesday President Trump stated the opposition leader, Juan Guaido as the legitimate leader of Venezuela.  This came as a shock as the current President Maduro was inaugurated for a second term two weeks ago.  Under Maduro, the country has suffered incredible hardships.  Tired of no food or any other basic necessities, the people have risen up and the opposition has declared that election not valid. Trump's decision came about after  monitoring the protests. Vice President Pence has gone further to state the people, and not Maduro, have the "unwavering support of the United States". Now we must wait to see Maduro's reaction.  Maduro still has the army behind him.

Venezuela’s children scavenger for food and soldiers run out of patience

As the dispute over who should lead Venezuela escalate to a larger geopolitical struggle between the United States, Russia, China and other, ,we spent nearly a week inside the country attending protests, talking to soldiers, meeting rich and poor. Within a month, food scarcity would likely drive the dollar cost of those groceries even higher. In local currency, the cost could easily double as the Venezuelan bolivar loses value.

I think that was is happening is horrible and that soldiers have a lot going on. With this happening people are rebelling and are doing things they usually wouldn’t do. So it is causing damage.

At 5 P.M. today 4 officers were shot while serving a warrant to a house suspected of selling drugs. The article talks about how it went down and the conditions of the officers. It also mentioned that 2 people were shot by the officers.

This comes during a time of growing fear against guns. The article was written for people who want to know what happened today. The article was made to inform people about the shooting, and it was written by Jason Morris and Darran Simon and the article was not affected by their any bias they may have. This is important because it shows people how dangerous a police officers job is, and how dangerous guns are.

Today 4 officers were shot while serving a warrant to a house suspected of selling drugs. The article talks about how it went down and the conditions of the officers. It also mentioned that 2 people were shot by the officers. The Houston Police Department issued a statement on Twitter saying "HPD responding to a scene at 7800 Harding where officers have been struck with gunfire following an encounter with a suspect. Officers are en route to the hospital. Please avoid the area and yield for emergency vehicles. Further updates will be provided as available."

This comes during a time of growing fear against guns. The article was written for people who want to know what happened today. I hope that the police officers have a speedy recovery.

Venezuela conditions- Madi Haggard

Nicolás Maduro was sworn in for a second round as the president of Venezuela on Jan. 10.  His re-election last year was widely disrespected by other countries around the world as fraudulent and set up.
A regular day in Venezuela has drastically changed for the worse from what it was not even a few years back.  From the government built homes, schools, and clinics made for the poor as part of its socialist policy; the people are now without some of the most necessities.
The country’s health care system has crumbled and has left many without access to lifesaving medicine. Hunger is everywhere, and grocery stores are barren.  There is no feeling or evidence of conditions improving anytime soon. The inflation rate is set to reach 10 million percent in 2019, then turning into one of the worst examples of hyperinflation in recent history.

This shows how some countries are worse off with their elected president.  I reported this article because of all the controversy with Trump and how he is running our country.  He is not the ideal candidate but all set we are stable and somewhat growing from his presidency.  This article was published         Jan. 24, 2019, and was made to inform people of other countries around the world and how they live. It's important for people to gain perspective on whats gang on around them and how the situation is not all that bad.

Glacial melts in the Canadian Arctic reveal land that hasn’t been seen in more than 40,000 years-Martina D’Orso

Global Warming has struck again, this time the same victim, glaciers, but in a more significant way than before. Glaciers have lost so many layers of ice caps that scientist have found plants from over 40,000 years ago. The climate change has produced record breaking glacial retreats, even to the extent where the Canadian Arctic may be facing the hottest century in over 115,000 years. Scientists have found around 48 plants from 30 ice layers and have used these plants to measure how long they have been under ice sheets.
The article was written by Rosie McCall on January 28, 2018. Previously, I had known that global warming posed a large threat to glaciers, but the fact that there are ice layers that are completely gone and that are disappearing at such an alarming rate is very eye opening. We can relate this to the White Chuck Glacier and how over time from 1850 to 1940 it completely thinned and from 1950 to 2005 separated into three different termini, one of which disappeared.

Government Shutdown Halts FDA Food Inspections- Kennedy Hannible

The FDA routine food inspections arent getting done because of the government shutdown. The agency said it has brought back about 150 employees to check their riskier foods like cheese, infant formula, and produce. And because of the shutdown the furloughed employees are returning without pay. The FDA does about 8,400 domestic inspections a year, with about 160 a week. a third of those are high-risk foods.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez calls Big Tech giants' dominance 'unsustainable' - Alma Alvarado- Cabrera

Democratic- rep .Alexandria Ocasio- Cortez is an active social media user , and with her use of technology she states that Silicon Valley companies have too much power , including companies like Buzzfeed and Huffpost following with the quote, "The current Monopoly is societally and economically unsustainable".  Ocasio-  Cortez adds on to say that tech Monopolies and concentration ownership are the biggest threads to Journalism. Matt Stoller, a fellow at The Open Markets Institute agrees by calling big companies like Facebook and  competitors like Google and Amazon ''exortion machines''.  This lead to a conclusion of not everyone at Washington thinks the news industry's woes can be attributed to Big Tech.

This article was written by Donie O'Sullivan and Gregory Krieg and published on January 27,2018 by CNN news . I had no clue that she even talked about this issue about Social Media and big companies . In my opinion , I know many people that are behind the biggest companies will find a way to manipulate people to make money, yet give us goods. It all starts from the beginning when trading started . Leslie Vasquez- Government Shutdown Ends

As of January 25th, the government has reopened for another 3 weeks in an effort for Democrats and Republicans to agree on a way to fund the wall Trump is demanding for. If no agreement is met, Trump has claimed that he will call a national emergency and shut down the government again. This shutdown has been declared the longest government shutdown in history. 35 days of uncertainty and workers all over the country not being paid.

I find it unpleasant that Trump will sacrifice the entire workforce's pay just to have the two political parties agree on a wall that might not happen. In my opinion, that isn't effective leadership. As a country, we literally lived through the longest government shutdown so far. What comes after this? I don't understand why Trump is putting so much emphasis on securing the border as extremely as he is when he could be focusing on other important things that could benefit the country better.

This weekend the roles were reversed as five Houston policeman were shot by 1 suspect while giving out warrants. Unfortunately we don't know the conditions of the officers, but I hope that they're all okay. We do know that the suspect had been killed but we still don't know if there was more than one suspect, so some people coukd still be in danger. With all that being said, let us all have the five police officers in our prayers.

He is currently on the run and his location is unknown. His parents were lucid enough to identify him as their attacker but later died in the hospital from their injuries. This story is sickening and brings to light a tragic waste of human life. Its also unnerving, knowing he's still out there and likely armed and dangerous. The sheriff of the town even remarked that this incident is one of the worst and most brutal domestic attacks in recent memory. The sensalization of this story reminds me a lot of yellow journalism typical of the gilded the age. The fear that this article stokes and spreads and the dramatic subject matter are both reminiscent to me of yellow journalism.

At least 5 Houston police officers shot. suspect down- Nathan Navejas

At least 5 Houston police officers shot, suspect down

At least five Houston officers were shot in an encounter with a suspect Monday night according to the city's police department. The Houston Police Department issued a statement on Twitter saying "HPD responding to a scene at 7800 Harding where officers have been struck with gunfire following an encounter with a suspect. Officers are en route to the hospital. Please avoid the area and yield for emergency vehicles. Further updates will be provided as available." Then the Mayor of Houston, Sylvester Turner said on Twitter that the suspect is down.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott released a statement on the "horrible attack". Thus saying "This evening's horrific attack on the police officers is a solemn reminder of the service and sacrifice of our brave men and women in law enforcement make every day to keep us safe," the statement said. "The city of Houston and the Houston Police Department will have whatever state resources they need to bring swift justice to those involved".
This unfortunately reminds me of the type of gun violence we have in our current society. This being an example of that violence has seemed to have started for no apparent reason.

Shutdown end sally north

After a record breaking thirty five day shutdown, Peesident Trump finally agreed to re open the government without the funding for his border wall. Some employees will be paid early this week while others will be paid at a later time. The shutdown was caused by disagreements over border security, specifically the wall and its inception.

The border wall is an example of nativist sentiments with Americans wanting no flow of immigrants into our country although they make many contributions, and our country is a Society of immigrants and their descendents.

Virginia teachers plan to leave their classrooms for a day and march- Fiona Graybill

Today in Richmond, Virginia, teachers from around the state gathered to march in a rally organized by Virginia Educators United to protest the lack of funding for their schools. Teachers are demanding better pay along with providing much needed money for the school buildings and the staff within.

The article mentions that some of the teachers that planned to march were part of various teachers unions around the state. In the time period we just moved past in class, labor unions were on the rise and it is clear, through this protest and those similar to it throughout the country, that unions and fair pay/funding are just as relevant now as they were in the previous centuries. It is so important that the men and women responsible for educating the future generations are compensated adequately for their work and I hope that the states will respond positively in regard to these protests and, if all goes well, they will listen to the education front-liners and improve their school systems.

R.kelly and teenage girls-ryian Johnson

https://apple.news/A48wXn22AQYOE_54cwSkAXw
It’s sad because the guy we all looked up to as a little kid is a child rapist and  pedophile. We all went to school singing I believe I can fly not knowing the truth behind the man. Over the last couple of years his actions have been taken to the media but not very popular. The media didn’t want to don anything until “surviving r kelly” came out . It’s about the survivors (mostly teenage girls or girls who were teenagers ) who had an mouth dropping horrible experience with him. He should pay for his actions because he has deprived these girls of their life.

Though it has not been officially announced or decided, Hillary is still open to running for president yet again in the 2020 election. This would be her third attempt at the office after losing to Barack Obama in the 2008 primaries and to Donald Trump in the 2016 election. The democrats already have many candidates including Kamala Harris, Michael Bloomberg, Joe Biden, and Bernie Sanders, who also ran in the 2016 election.

It is crucial that the democrats chose their candidate soon. The party is extremely scattered, because many dems believe that there is no way that Trump can win again, so they see this is their chance. We have seen many times through out American history that a divided party is rarely successful. Any time a party has split off, the other party has won. It is not the time to risk the election. It is important to get someone new in power, and I respect Hillary, but in my opinion she is far to controversial. We need a candidate that swaying republicans will vote for.

It reminds me of Henry Clay who also ran for president many times, but he was never successful, and I do not think Hillary will be either.

Yellow Journalism in the 21st Century - Hadley McGhee

Collins' Dictionary defines yellow journalism as "the use of cheaply sensational or unscrupulous methods in newspapers, etc. to attract or influence readers," and while some of the headlines are pretty funny, this is still a big problem in 2019. Stretching the truth in journalism might not sound that bad, but remember, yellow journalism helped start the Spanish-American war.

So, without further ado, here are some 2018 and 2019 yellow journalism pieces, to show that this phenomenon is still a big deal in today's society.

Yellow Journalism Leaning Blue

Rudy Giuliani is Going to Prison After All - Palmer Report

What's wrong with this:
1. We don't have any real evidence that Giuliani is or will be indicted yet.
2. The writer uses the Mueller investigation to excite and anger democrats. (When  Giuliani ISN'T arrested, people get mad, causing backlash not at the false journalism, but at whomever disproves it.)

Trump Wanted Even the Robot Version of Himself at Disney World to be a Lying Braggart - Alternet

What's wrong with this:
1. Where did they even get this information
2. The Title is ALREADY a Slam at the subject. Most factual articles have pretty neutral headlines

Yellow Journalism Leaning Red

Microsoft Conspiring With Pro-Monsanto Front Group to Censor Anti-GMO News - World Truth TV

What's wrong with this:
1. Literally nobody else is talking about this. Typically real news has more than one source reporting on it
2. If it feels like clickbait, it probably is

Proof: Gay Frogs Are Real - InfoWars
1. Gay frogs? Really?
2. Gay frogs? Really?

Millions of Illegal Immigrants Voted in the 2016 Election - InfoWars
1. There was no evidence of this
2. When several states recounted in 2016 and 2017, they found that more voter fraud had occurred in favor of Trump

Yellow journalism, though it now consists of gay frogs and robots rather than Spanish American War news, is just as bad as the original yellow journalism that permanently tainted good reporting in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

DISCLAIMER: THE ABOVE ARTICLES ARE NOT VERIFIED AND I DO NOT RECOMMEND BELIEVING THEM. IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO SO, THAT IS YOUR OWN BAD DECISION AND I, MS. COUNTRYMAN, AND D.I.S.D. ARE NOT LIABLE FOR FOR WHAT MISINFORMATION YOU CHOOSE TO BELIEVE.

Violet Wiedemer- End to the Government shutdown

After a record-breaking 35-day government shutdown, Trump finally re-opened the government, staff saying that same government employees will be paid early this week, and some later in the week. The shutdown occurred as a result of discussions between Trump and Congress about border security, specifically the wall that Trump planned to build on the Mexican border.

The border wall reminds me of the nativism prominent in the late 19th and early 20th century, where immigrants were those who built amazing things like the transcontinental railroad, but white Americans still pushed for bans on their entrance into the country.

Ryan Mecca | Brokaw suggested Latino immigrants' kids don't assimilate. That's a myth

Tom Brokaw recently made a comment claiming that children descended from Latinx immigrants have a hard time assimilating, particularly with learning English. Many studies show the opposite; these children are actually increasingly learning English and at increasing proficiencies, many considering English to be their dominant language. Recently Brokaw made an apology Tweet saying he's sorry that they "offended some members of that proud culture"; immigration policy analyst says he should've just admitted he was wrong.
As immigration becomes an increasingly controversial issue with the election of Donald Trump as president in 2016, people find opportunities to be racist or nativist in efforts to make immigration seem worse than it is. This article is directed towards any people who are ignorant when it comes to the current assimilation of immigrants and their children; as we get further into these debates over whether or not immigration is a problem, people seem to think they can blame immigrants for things and use their possible lack of knowledge of American culture as an attack. Catherine E. Shoichet writes this article in order to provide these people with knowledge so that maybe we can be more accepting of the immigrants coming into our country and stop making assumptions based on the fact that they aren't from here. Shoichet provides a plethora of resources--including graphs and quotes--to back up her opinion that it is wrong to assume that Latinx immigrants are not teaching their children English, along with other cultural aspects that may help them assimilate.
Of course, as the title includes the world assimilate, I have to relate this to the assimilation of the Native Americans during the Gilded Age. The Dawes Severalty Act, passed in 1887, allowed the federal government to assess and break up Native American land. The government then sold the land to Native American families who, if unwilling to split up their tribe to gain land, were forced to move to reservations where they would be stripped of their cultures, taught English, and converted to Christianity in order to assimilate. Many Americans at the time felt like these Native Americans caused problems and therefore made laws like the Dawes Act to give them an excuse to get rid of them, similar to the comments made by Tom Brokaw and other xenophobic individuals against Latinx immigrants and their children.

Violet Wiedemer- Influenza

The CDC released its weekly influenza report last week, stating that several states have widespread infection and that three deaths occurred during week 3. Even though many people have the flu vaccine, it is not 100% effective against the virus; 1% of the virus strands are resistant to antiviral weapons, such as medicine, or the flu vaccine.

This is reminiscent of the 1918 influenza outbreak, which was devastating to the population, particularly due to the fact that WWI was still going on at the time. However, the outbreak taught us a lot about modern sanitation and vaccination.

Study shows screentime ties to poorer age development among toddlers!

CNN put out this article at 11 am on Monday January 28th.  According to a new study, it has been proven that toddlers who spend a lot of time staring at a screen, have poor development. This affects the toddlers growth in communication, motor skills, problem solving skills, and social skills. These studies show that toddlers should be limited to only 1 hour of screentime per day. The article also comments how the average child spends 5-7 hours on the screen each day which is extremely scary. I think that this article is extremely scary, but something that parents should read in order to protect their children. Technology can be very dangerous and detrimental to a person’s health. I think this article is trying to reach out to parents and warn them about the consequences of technology on their child’s health. From reading this article if I were a parent, I’d limit my child’s screen time for sure.
