Gold Trust Caribbean Bakery & Grill Founder commits suicide- Heaven-Leigh Pettis

Gold Trust Caribbean Bakery & Grill Founder commits suicide inside his Bronx Factory

Lowell Hawthorne, 57, was found dead inside his Bronx Factory Saturday night from what looked like a self-inflicted gun wound. Hawthorne was discovered around 5:30 p.m. ET and police are still investigating the cause of his death even though it looks like a suicide. Hawthorne came to New York from Jamaica, hoping to find great opportunities and soon grow his Caribbean food empire at 21 years old. With help from his family, he opened his first food business, Golden Krust, in 1989.
Though his death hasn't been ruled suicide just yet, it's crazy to think that someone is enjoying life and has everything together and then have something happen like this. I know that some people rather not talk about being depressed and suicidal but I think it's better to get it out. I do think that in the black community, there are a lot of people who think depression is just "the blues" and that it can be dealt with without medication and therapists. In some cases that can be a good outlook but it isn't a good outlook when someone is crying for help and you tell them its just "the blues."

  1. This is so sad. I think it is good that they are investigating the cause of death just to ensure that they are correct. Furthering investigations will hopefully give the family more closure.
