New Eco-Friendly Cruise- 12/11/17 (Ashton Benn)

Ships weighing 220,00 gross tons use an immense amount of fuel and can cause extreme environmental problems, but cruise participation is continuing to skyrocket around the world. The Japanese business, Peace Boats, is working to create a sustainable vessel in this booming industry. One ship can burn tons of heavy fuel oil a day, and can emit as much matter as a million cars, so how are they working to reduce emissions? "Ecoship" will be fueled by solar power, wind power, and cleaner natural gases that will reduce carbon emissions by 40%. This is taking a commercial industry back to its original sailing roots. Not only will the design be greener, but the passengers will be able to attend environmental change conventions and lectures that will go on to educate the world in creating a more viable society.
Personally, I love cruise ships, but I also want to effect change in the world so that we can continue living on Earth with the resources we have now. Humans started making impressions on the environment as early as the Native Americans who used the slash and burn agricultural technique to harvest crops. This depleted the nutrients in the soil and exhausted the land. This type of farming has continued until today and it has only worsened, but that is not specific to farming. It is up to our generation to better the Earth for the future and using technology for ideas like these is how we will accomplish this seemingly impossible task.

  1. This is definitely an important step in the progress of technological advancement that benefits the ecosystem. Cruise ships and methods of transportation in general have fuel emissions for days, so this will hopefully benefit the environment.

  2. I had no idea that cruise ships were so bad for the environment, but it is good to hear that companies are taking steps to be less wasteful and pollute less.
