Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration released a warning saying that pampering your dog with bone treats could actually be deadly. The FDA acknowledged the issue after receiving about 68 reports of dog illnesses tied to the treats in question. Bone treats are real bones that have been dried, flavored, and packaged for dogs. These treats are big sellers in many pet stores world wide. Dog bones are said to cause many health risks such as: blockages in the digestive tract, choking, cuts, vomiting, diarrhea, and in the worst cases, death. Overall, about 15 dogs have died from bone treats.
This is very worrisome. My dog does not eat bone treats, but I know many friends and relatives who give these treats to their dogs. I hope that the FDA brings more awareness to this warning, because I think it is one that not many people are aware of. Dogs are such great pets, and I would hate for someone to lose a dog due to a health issue from a treat. Instead of bones, I think a dog could be pampered with chicken or turkey; something that will not hurt the dog but still tastes good.

This is awful! We give my dog bone treats, but I'll tell my mom to stop buying them for her. You're right, there needs to be more awareness for this.
ReplyDeleteOh no! This is terrible. My dog like yours doesn't get bone treats, but I also know many people who give their dogs those treats. I would never want anything to happen to them. I agree that awareness is a must.
