Brooke Simpson-Will Robots Take Our Children's Jobs?

Will Robots Take Our Children’s Jobs?

The author has two sons who are seven and four years old and love robots.  Could the robots that they love so much be taking their jobs?  Many people’s jobs, such as radiologists, surgeons, lawyers, baseball players, pilots, referees, and stockbrokers are all at risk of being taken by robots according to the author.  As many as 47% of jobs can be done by robots and might be done by robots within the next 20 years.  Many people are worried that artificial intelligence will destroy humans, and according to Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla says that it “is potentially more dangerous than nukes.”  But it could be a good thing, it has in the past.  Cars made many jobs not necessary, but created many new jobs.  With old jobs out of the way, humans can move to new jobs, and robots will just follow us.  As the routine jobs are given to computers, humans can do things like psychology that requires interpersonal communication.  Some even think humans could enjoy lives of leisure while robots give people things.  Other people argue that this is over exaggerated, we’ve had the A.T.M. for almost 50 years, and it created more jobs in the banking industry.  Most people agree that jobs that require human emotions and working with their hands will be safe, but who knows?

The article was written by Alex Williams on December 11, 2017 for the New York Times.  This is a very time sensitive article, the technological industry is always moving and changing.  The article was written for anybody, it is a little frightening to learn that your job or the job you hope to have could be taken away by robots in the coming decades.  The author is pretty emotional, he is really concerned that his sons’ jobs aren’t going to be done by humans when the time they reach the workforce.  The article was written to inform people that robots are getting more advanced than we know, and that they will be taking our jobs sooner or later, but we might get new jobs out of it.  The article is really important to high schoolers especially because we are looking at colleges and majors and jobs, and the jobs we may want could be moving towards jobs for robots.  The robots taking our jobs can be compared to the Industrial Revolution when jobs that were done in homes were moved to factory jobs.  While it made women’s jobs at home obsolete, it made new factory jobs for women to work in, and they were able to make money on their own.
