Political unrest in Honduras- Melanie Escalante

Summary: Protests have been breaking out in Honduras due to their presidential election. Citizens believe that Jaun Oralando Hernandez tampered with the presidential election in his favor and not his opponent, Salvador Nasralla. After the people began speaking up about their feelings towards this issue, the chief magistrate of the electoral commission, under the control of the ruling national party, agreed to recount the votes. However, due to the alliance rejecting this resolution, protests grew even more chaotic. Because of the mayhem accompanying the election crisis, a curfew was placed upon the people which only angered them and triggered more protesting. Soldiers have been given the task of keeping control but deaths and injuries have already occurred. Some people want a whole new election and some want a recount. If things don’t get worked out soon then things will continue to grow tense.
Synthesis: Although the US election of 2016 didn’t have obvious backfire like in Honduras, the country no longer felt united. The people of Honduras believed that their election was manipulated and in 2016, citizens of the United States thought the same thing about theirs. The accusations weren’t as likely, but there was controversy since Trump won the electoral vote but not the popular vote. We didn’t expect Trump to win since the progress and the product didn’t exactly add up. It seemed that after the election, supporters of Trump grew more confident in expressing hateful attitudes towards. This continues going on but gets swept under the rug.
Analysis: I think that the people of Honduras deserve to have their voices heard. If they continue being ignored, the people will be forced to fight back and the leaders will learn their lesson. You can’t just suspend the constitutional rights of the people and get away with it. It is completely unjust and something must happen. I admire their dedication and love for their country and themselves. Despite harsh enforcement, death, and violence, they continue fighting. The possibilities are endless if justice isn’t restored but I just hope it won’t lead to that.
