Townley Jordan: Thirteen Reasons Why Season Two

Summary: Thirteen Reasons Why is a show based on a young adult novel by Jay Asher, in which the main character Hannah Baker details the bullying and trauma that led to her suicide. Although the book does not have a sequel, the series co-showrunner Brian Yorkey says,"Hannah's story isn't over — she has parents who still don't have the complete story, There's a rapist who hasn't been brought to justice and there's a living survivor of that rapist who is just beginning her journey of recovery." While the show has been tremendously popular with fans, there has also been controversy over the sensitive topics involved in the show. Netflix gave a TV-MA rating, also adding content warnings given the graphic depictions of rape and suicide. They also set up a website with crisis information and suicide prevention resources.

Analysis: I can’t decide how I feel about this. I think it is either going to be really great, or will be better left at season 1. If done well, it will be another hit for Netflix for sure. This show has caused much controversy and is full of sensitive topics, and although to me doesn’t show the true realities of teen life, does have a good intent in showing a clear message. Although I feel sequels are usually not as good as the original thing, I have hope that a second season may bring the show justice.

  1. I am interested to see how season 2 takes place, and how it will read compared to the first! I'm excited though!

  2. Yes, many people have brought to attention the "insensitivity" and "romanticizing" of suicide issues. Hopefully, season two will not continue to bring about the same problems and steers towards actually promoting life.

  3. I haven't seen the show (mostly because graphic depictions of suicide and self harm aren't something I enjoy or can watch) but I fervently hope the alleged romanticization of suicide flippin stops.
