This article follows the struggle of a transgender man, Elijah Fischer, to get healthcare coverage for top surgery. His insurance company reportedly told him they would cover it, and then denied coverage when conferring with the surgeon. Transgender individuals are often denied surgery coverage by healthcare companies, and companies who promised to cover sex reassignment surgery and related operations have been holding out to see if Trump will make it easier for them not to by acting against the Affordable Care Act, which prohibits gender discrimination.
Fun fact: medical professionals and organizations claim that surgery for transgender individuals is a necessity due to gender dysphoria and associated psychological issues (such as anxiety). But nah, let's just deny healthcare coverage to trans people.
This article also provides info on how much top surgery can cost- Fischer had to pay around 10 grand in total (over 5.6 grand for the actual surgery and the rest to fund associated odds and ends, medical supplies, and necessities for staying in a hotel by the surgeon through recovery).
I'm now freaking out about how the heck I'm going to be able to pay for this for myself. That's a dungload of dollars. I don't have any type of insurance or supportive parents. I'm relying on scholarships to attend college. Life is just gonna be great.
Basically, trans people are told that they have to get surgery or they aren't "real men" or "real women" (which is ridiculous in the first place, and completely ignores NB individuals) but then expected to pay out of pocket for 10k surgeries even though they're often no longer in contact with family members. Fischer lucked out and was able to ask for money to go toward surgery in lieu of wedding gifts on the occasion of his recent marriage, but still had to pay a lot.
So America isn't really letting pre-op trans people pee in the right restroom, and America also isn't really letting them get surgery so that they can pee in the restroom they wish.
I love this country.
