Synopsis: Drugs such as methamphetamine and amphetamine were recently detected in Baltimore streams. These drugs seem to be affecting the water and the creatures in it. Researchers with the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies have concluded that the drugs in these water are altering the growth and development of the creatures who depend on the aquatic habitat. This does not immediately affect humans as of now, but scientists fear that increases in this kind of activity could lead to a contamination of ground and drinking water.
Analysis: The fact that we now have to worry about drugs invading the environment is ridiculous. Our population is so ravaged by addiction that now animals are having to deal with consequences. Frankly it's scary that meth can do to organisms what the article describes. It makes the thought of how they harm humans even more gruesome. Also, how tf is it getting into the streams? Are people just dumping their meth into the water? That's spooky my dude.
Synthesis: The changes seen in the organisms of these streams is similar to the mutations experienced after the Chernobyl disaster. The radiation from this catastrophe caused some animals and even humans to undergo genetic mutations.
