Gracie Darlington: Supreme Court won’t review decision that found N.C. voting law discriminates against African Americans

The Supreme Court has officially declared that they will not consider reinstating a North Carolina voting law which discriminates against African American voters. Democrats and people of color are celebrating this blow to the North Carolina republicans, and are pushing for even more equal rights in the polls. Democrat Roy Cooper recently said, “We need to be making it easier to vote, not harder — and the court found this law sought to discriminate against African-American voters with ‘surgical precision.’"
Southern states have been trying to restrict African American voters ever since the 15th amendment was ratified. This recent decision is a step in the right direction, but the government still has a long way to go in terms of protecting equal rights for minorities. This can synthesize back to the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the 24th amendment, which were passed in an attempt to get rid of restrictions for African American voters.
