Sophia Jalilvand: Girl dies in British theme park accident

Summary: An 11-year-old girl was on a school field trip to Drayton Manor theme park, north of Birmingham, and fell from the Splash Canyon water ride, killing her. The company director of the UK theme park, George Bryan, said that "It is with great sadness we have to report that a young girl has passed away at Birmingham Children's Hospital following an incident on one of the park's water rides this afternoon." The girl, a year 6 student, attended the independent Islamic school Jameah Academy in Leicester. She died shortly after being airlifted to the hospital with doctor treatment on the way.

Analysis: This is such a tragic event, especially for the girl's family. Thankfully, the park stayed closed today in respect for the family. The ride is similar to one in the Dreamworld theme park in Queensland, Australia, on which four people died on the Thunder River Rapids ride in October of last year. Malfunctions do happen, but it is truly a tragedy that things like this happen. It continues to fuel people's fear of amusement parks, but partially for good reason.

  2. It's so tragic that these things happen. I would like to know if there was a mechanical problem or if everything was working as designed.
