A surveillance video was released by the superintendent of an Illinois school district shows a bus aide repeatedly striking a little girl. The girl, Kaylee, has autism and is nonverbal. The bus aide had also been touching Kaylee throughout the bus ride. Nicholas Rushing, Kaylee's father, was outraged by the video. He remarked how the incident has changed Kaylee's behavior, as she is now afraid of strangers. The police department is investigating the video, the bus operator, and the aide.
It is horrible to treat a special needs child with such disrespect and violence. She is nonverbal and had no way of defending herself, and to strike her is never and appropriate response. Currently, no lawsuits have been filed, but it would not surprise me if this injustice went to court, for this aide, at least, needs to face retribution. I feel horribly for Kaylee and her parents as they go through the trauma associated with the incident. This connects to Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, which protects the rights of special needs children and their parents.
