Experts warn of increases in tick-borne Powassan virus by Macey Kanaman 8th Period

Summary: This disease originates from ticks and could potentially be life threatening. In the past decade, many new cases have popped up. This is due to warmer winters which has caused an increase in tick population. Dr. Jennifer Lyons has stated that everyone can be affected by this disease, not just newborns or the elderly. Lyons also has claimed that approximately 15% of patients who contract the virus and show no symptoms will not survive. Many who survive will suffer, "long-term neurological damage" that apparently is not easy to cure. The virus begins with flu like symptoms and then can develop into seizures and difficulty breathing. The best way to avoid contracting the disease is prevention.

Analysis: This tick problem is very alarming. Majority of the ticks that have been tested are positive for this virus. The warmer winters we have the worse this problem gets. Global warming has many negative affects and his is one of them. In the past there were probably lots of infections and diseases that we don't have any knowledge about. At least today, we can identify viruses which helps us be able to cure them. I hope that we can find a cure soon and until then take preventative action.
