Summary: 33 years ago in 1984, the sands at Doogah on County Mayo's Achill Island disappeared and the beach was unable to be accessed until April 17, when it was discovered that a new 300 meter stretch of sand had appeared in it's place. There had been many violent storms in Ireland during the winter of 1984, and all of the sand on the beach had completely vanished in under 10 days. Achill Island is the largest island in Ireland, but the beach town has less than 3,000 people. However, the beach hosts lots of tourist every year who come by to experience the beauty of the island.
Analysis: This article was written on May 8, 2017, by Maureen O'Hare, to tell the amazing story of this forgotten beach's reemergence. Many people had not expected the beach to return, especially after so many years. It's amazing that the sand has been redeposited in the same place, especially in such large amounts. I'm sure tourism will soon be thriving again as it did 30 years ago.
Synthesis: It is common to see beaches disappearing, especially in places with high speed wind or large storms. Some beaches, such as in Nantucket, lose 5-10 feet of beach every year.
