Madilyn Weems - Free Community College?

This article discusses how Tennessee will become the first state offering free community college for everyone; which has never done before. Tennessee has already been providing free community college for those whom have graduated high school in Tennessee, but now they are pushing to allow anyone, no matter from what state. The article states, “During the seventh State of the State address to the General Assembly, Governor Bill Haslam introduced the Tennessee Reconnect Act. If approved, this would make Tennessee the first state to offer all citizens – both high school students and adults – the chance to earn a post-secondary degree or certificate free of tuition and fees.” It follows to tell that it will not cost taxpayers a dime and it will encourage kids from whatever background to get a good education. This is so important and a huge step, because I definitely believe colleges should not be as expensive as they are, because education is a fundamental right that all should have the opportunity to. This relates to the education reforms for public schools to be open everywhere and to create a law that makes children be required to attend school until the age of 18.

  1. This would be amazing for students like us! Free tuition is definitely a pull factor for any city, and I hope that this act passes!

  2. I think this article is very interesting. Community colleges should be free since it is about as close to a high school you can get after college.
