Abbey Winiger- Migrants Rescued
SUMMARY- More than 900 migrants were rescued from boats in the Mediterranean in the space of only a few hours Saturday morning, according to the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders, or Medecins Sans Frontieres.
The group said via Twitter that 797 people -- including 205 women and 22 children -- were now on its ship, the Argos. More than 700 were rescued from a large wooden boat spotted before dawn. All of the migrants were so happy to be rescued, and relived to be on board. Those seeking to make the journey from Libya are at greatest risk, the agency said.
Libya is a popular jumping-off point for migrants seeking to reach Europe from North Africa. Smuggling networks are well-established there, and the lack of an effective central government makes the job of traffickers easier.
ANALYSIS/SYNTHESIS- Prior to reading this article I had not heard about the heroic rescue. This story has a positive influence on their audience because it creates hope. This story was written to inform and educate about the immigration and tough travels from Libya. I think this story is so amazing, and I hope that the rescue teams can keep being so effective. This story reminds me of the refugee crisis, and how so many people were willing to help those in need after their rough travels.

It's crazy to see all the things people will sacrifice to just be happy. I also think this story is positive and gives hope for others. - Skyler Tepedino
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that these people were helped and will hopefully move on to live happier lives now that they've left libya.
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of interesting to note how well organizations like Doctors Without Borders are helping refugees in their times of need. It's moving to know that even when many countries are issuing federal orders not take in more than a certain amount of refugees, humanitarians are doing all they can to provide the basic necessities that most of us take for granted every day.
