Townley Jordan - Canadian Immigration Website Crashes Following Election

Summary: As it became clear on Tuesday night that Donald Trump was going to win the election, the Canadian immigration website crashed with people seeking to leave the United States. The website of Citizenship and Immigration Canada appeared to have crashed based on the amount of people looking to emigrate from the United States. Trump’s victory has been expected to foster huge anxiety and fear in his opposers. Canada’s official twitter posted a seemingly relevant tweet once it became clear that Trump was going to win, saying, “In Canada, immigrants are encouraged to bring their cultural traditions with them and share them with their fellow citizens.” In the past months, Canada has been actively taking in refugees from many countries. Their government has been praised for welcoming refugees from countries all around the globe. An example of this is that the government has run a campaign for welcoming Syrians fleeing the war with open arms.

Analysis: This article was written in the day following the announcement that Donald Trump was the the president elect of the United States. Once it became clear that he was going to win the electoral vote, the Canadian website actually crashed because of the amount of people on it. It was written during the immediate chaos, outrage, and aftermath following the election. Many people have been saying for a while that they would leave the country if Trump was elected, and when he was elected the website was flooded with people looking at information on how to gain Canadian citizenship, as well as many probably on the website as a joke. While I do find myself seeking such a drastic change as to leave the country just yet,  I do completely understand the feelings that drove some people to look into this. The article was written to inform people of how many are in sheer opposition to Donald Trump, as well as shed a comedic light on what was for many a horrid, sorrowful day. While the article did have a comedic effect, it also had the somber undertone of the reality that Trump will really be our next president. It is not a joke anymore, it is real, and it is a scary thought for many people. Although Hillary won the popular vote, with what is set largest numbers second to only Obama, she lost the electoral college, and therefore did not win the presidency. This relates to the 2000 election, the most highly contested election in modern day history, where Al Gore won the popular vote, but George W. Bush won the electoral college.

  1. Kiri Luckey: I heard about this but thought it was just a rumor. This is crazy I understand that some people are frightened because of our soon to be new president but I don't think things need to be taken to that extreme because we still and will always have our civil/human rights no matter what.

  2. i think we ought to at least give president-elect trump a chance to prove the american people wrong, before any of us start to migrate elsewhere.

  3. I understand why people would think about moving out of America, however, I think that we should all give Trump a chance because the majority of people wanting to move are basing that decision on what they fear is going to happen.
