Across the country following the results of the election, multitudes of protests have erupted in disgust about America's new President-Elect. While the riots have been mostly peaceful demonstrations, some violence has erupted as police attempt to control the protests and tensions rise between Trump's protesters and supporters. There have been protests outside of Trump Tower, the current home that Trump resides in, located in New York City. Trump has addressed these protestors via twitter, stating "Just had a very open and successful presidential election. Now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting. Very unfair!", and, "Love the fact that the small groups of protesters last night have passion for our great country. We will all come together and be proud!". Other protests locations include Dallas, TX; Portland, OR; Los Angeles, CA; Chicago; Boston; Asheville, NC; and Columbus, OH.
Protests are demonstrations of what make America special, as the right to gather and the right to have peaceful demonstrations against the government are rights supported in the constitution. By speaking out about what we believe in, there is a small chance in reversing the decision when the electoral college votes on december 19th. Prior to this, two court cases against Trump will occur, one being a charge of the rape of a thirteen year old girl. If enough action is taken, the results may be changed by getting swing states that voted in favor of trump to change their vote in the electoral college. Thanks to precedents established in the creation of our country, this decision can be reversed.

It makes me feel lucky to live in a country where we have the right to protest and petition the government. Though I do hope that these protests stay peaceful and don't turn violent.
ReplyDeleteThrough the first amendment people have this right, I agree its what makes America great.
