Skyler Tepedino - Anti- Muslim experience on NYC Bus

Summary:
This past Thursday Fariha Nizam, 19 years old, was riding a NYC local bus after a full day of school at Hunter College, and encountered a terrifying experience. Just two days after Trump won the election she was taking the local bus into Manhattan, immediately upon, a white couple starts verbally attacking her. The white couple was yelling at her to take off her hijab and that they are banned… throughout the whole ride they kept staring at her and telling her to take the hijab off. Later Fariha was bawling because of anxiety and the fact the she felt weak because she couldn't do anything about the white couple. During the bus ride passengers tried to intervene with the white woman but she kept getting angrier and progressively got closer and closer to Fariha attempting to take the hijab off herself. In the aftermath of the Presidential Election, there has been 201 innocents of election- related harassment and intimidation.

Analysis:
This incident is very much similar to Rosa Parks when she was riding the local bus and was being forced to stand so that a white person could have her seat. She totally disdained the fact that she had to give her seat up and made a very distinct point to everyone on the bus that she was sick and tired of the way African Americans were being treated. Even though Fariha didn't say anything to this woman, she still realized that she didn't have to take her hijab off just because a white couple says it's wrong. After reading this article I feel angry with the citizens of the United States, it's maddening that people don't have respect for one another no matter what religion, race, ethnicity, etc. As a country, this election should make us come more together, not tear us apart and go as far as disrespecting someones beliefs and traditions.

  1. It's very sad that people feel they have the right to be hateful and disrespectful just because of who's in office. I hope we can come together as a country and have a good, successful 4 years of respect.

  2. I'm nervous for the next four years, and it's saddening that Muslim women are feeling threatened and scared to wear the hijab... it's too awful.

  3. i hate to see people lash out on other people for no reason whatsoever, people should be free to express what they believe w/o fear of ridicule!!! isn't that the founding principle of our country? 1st amendment?
