Gay marriage set to become legal in Taiwan, a first in Asia - Emma Reyna

Summary:
In a matter of months it is evident that Taiwan could become the first country in Asia to legalize and pass same-sex marriage laws. Over the past few days Taiwan's parliament is working towards making this happen. Three bills supporting marriage equality are already in the making and are said to be reviewed and passed anytime in the following months. Along with support of many Taiwanese citizens President Tsa Ing-wen, Taiwan's first female head of state, stated that she is also in support of gay marriage as she said recently this October. Yu Mei-nu, a ruling Democratic Progressive Party MP who is sponsoring the same-sex marriage bill now in line for parliamentary debate, said it would be a big step forward for human rights in the region. If this law is successful Taiwan would join countries such as Canada, Colombia, and Ireland that have legalized same-sex marriage over the past 15 years.

Analysis/Synthesis:

I'm quite excited that more and more countries are moving towards accepting and legalizing same sex marriage. Its surreal that just a year ago on June 26, 2015 gay marriage was legalized in all 50 states in the United States and to see other countries progressing to do the same makes me really happy and hopeful for the future. And when Taiwan eventually makes marriage equality legal I hope this will serve as model to other countries in Asia and will follow their ways on accepting and legalizing such an act. Its slow progress and in some ways hard to do and accept but I hope that eventually one day same sex marriage will be legalized in at least a majority of the countries around the world, its certainly possible and may take some baby steps but I believe we can eventually achieve it.

  3. This is so so so good to hear, since there is the scare of our same-sex marriage bill being repealed. I am glad this is finally happening to Asia!
