Cop cleared in choke-hold death of Eric Garner, Madana Kloss 4th period.
On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner, died in Staten Island, New York, because a police officer put him in a choke-hold, a technique that has been banned from the NYPD. Garner was firstly approached by Officer Justin Damico because of Garner's suspicion of selling loose cigarettes. Apparently Garner had been getting harassed before by these officers. After Garner stated to the police that he was tired of being harassed by them and at the time he was not selling cigarettes, as he pleaded multiple times "Please just leave me alone." Officers approached to arrest Garner. Officer Daniel Pantaleo, who was the other officer, put his arms around Garner's neck, putting him in a choke-hold. Garner was then brought to the ground from the hold and in the video that has since gone viral, he can be heard repeating "I can't breathe." Garner was described as a generous, friendly person by his friends and also had six children. On December 3, 2014, the grand jury did not indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo. The officer stated that he didn't mean to kill Garner because he didn't think he was in any mortal danger. Obviously, there has been many protests because of this event, not helping the fact this decision came out barely a week from the trial for the death of Michael Brown.
