Cities and states all over the nation are now banning or tagging a five cent tax onto customers' grocery bills everyday for using plastic bags. The idea is to cut down on the amount of plastic each person and companies' carbon footprint and leave behind a better legacy. The law was enacted after the first of the year and many people aren't too happy about it. Plastic bags are much easier to use for most and they do not appreciate being taxed for convenience.

Analysis: This idea of taxing the consumers for basic goods follows us into the 1700's with the Stamp Act, Sugar Act and the Molasses Act. People were taxed highly for basic goods which caused an uprising and a hatred for the governing people. This tax obviously isn't as severe and is for a c=better cause for EVERYONE, but I think in time the hype and uproar over the issue will settle.
This is a great step towards a cleaner world! A lot of litter and even just landfill trash is plastic bags; it is good that they are doing something to lessen that.
ReplyDeleteI can see why it would upset people. I like your relation to the stamp act, and other various taxes that were passed by the British Yoke.

I agree with Corran: small steps such as this Bag Act allow the community to move towards a more environmentally conscious society.
ReplyDeleteAgreed with the three comments. I like the mention of previous taxation acts, and I think it will cause some arguments and hype. But I like this next step
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to see how many cities and states are choosing to take steps that will, in the long run, benefit the environment. Although some may disagree with this tax, it is really not extreme, and hopefully it will cause individuals to stop using plastic bags.
ReplyDeleteEven this past week, everywhere I have gone they have spoken to me about this act and the environmental involvement. It is not so bad because almost everyone has a reusable bag they have been give, they just need to carry it with them.
ReplyDeleteUnlike the stamp act, sugar act, ect., the bag tax has good intentions in bettering our world. It isn't an unfair act of a controlling government and will probably heap a lot of good results.
ReplyDeleteI think that this is an innovative and effective solution to an issue that has been a detriment to not only America's land, but all lands. We are setting an example by taking a stand for the environment, however; I think that it might put a dent in someone's wallet if they accidentally forgot their recyclable bags one day so truly, plastic bags should just be outlawed for best results.
