Father Arrested For Treating Sick Daughter- Iris Hughey p.5

On Christmas Eve, Rumer Rose, the 2-year-old daughter of Adam Koessler, was diagnosed with late-stage cancer. The doctors proposed 12 months of chemotherapy, while Rumer's father and mother (divorced) treat her with a complementary therapy of naturopathic medicine, gluten-free meals, and medical-grade cannabis oil. Koessler lives in Australia, where medical marijuana is illegal, and was arrested on January 2. He was released on bail but now faces charges for possessing the drugs, and is due back in court on Firday. While there is much controversey over Koessler treating his daughter with an illegal medicine, he says that it has worked wonders. "What we saw when Rumer was given the medical cannabis oil was nothing short of miraculous...Her skin color came back, her eyes were sparkling again...We were certain after seeing these results that her recovery was entirely possible." Koessler said.

While marijuana is illegal in Australia as well as many other areas in the world, I think it is unjust that it cannot be used for the medical treatment of a person enduring extreme pain and discomfort. There are probably hundreds, maybe even thousands of other cases like Rumer Rose's where a person is ill and is forced to "commit a crime" by treating themselves with a natural drug that could make them feel better than they have in years. I hope that with this case, some changes are made for the better.

  1. This is pretty messed up. Marijuana does have medicinal values, and they need to be acknowledged, especially if it is helping patients around the world. Perhaps the government (both in the US and Australia) needs to reevaluate its laws on marijuana.

  2. Medical use of it is effective and really should be legalized everywhere.

  3. The o ly problem with legalizing it for medical use is controlling it outside of its purpose. If the go ernment does take the steps to have it legalized everywhere, they should step up their watch outside of hospital use.

  4. It's been made so incredibly obvious at this point how marijuana has the power to work quite well in curing certain symptoms and sicknesses, and this band that still holds many from legalizing it for medical use is purely derived from government fear that the legalization of marijuana will get out of their own hands. But if that's the price to pay for hundreds of cured and healthy patients, then perhaps the situation should be considered more thoroughly.

  5. It is immature and life threatening to not allow those who truly need this medical treatment access to it. There is no valid reason to stop this child from getting the medial care she needs.
