Police say sex offenders wore GPS monitors during killings. Ashley Barnes 2nd

Steven Dean Gordon and Franc Cano were both charged and convicted of sexual crimes against children, mandated to register as sexual offenders and forced to wear a GPS ankle monitor for their crimes.  This week, these two men  were charged with killing four women in Southern California.  In fact, these two men were actively wearing their GPS ankle bracelets when they committed their crimes.  While they seemed to be following their parole requirements by checking in with authorities every 30 days, apparently their whereabouts were not be properly monitored.  As a result 4 women are dead.  Authorities in Southern California have a lot of explaining to do to the public.
When violent sex offenders are convicted of a crime it is standard procedure for them to be required to register on the national sexual offender register so authorities can know where they live and better keep the community safe.  In fact, protection of the community has to be the highest priority in these cases because the chances that they will hurt again are so high.  In some ways they are marked for life because of their crime and this helps parents and schools and other people to keep a vigilant watch over them.

Adding a GPS ankle monitor is just one more way to monitor their activity.  For me, it seems like there should be some way to know if two sexual offenders are spending time together.  It seems to me as if this would increase their risk of sexually offending again.  Maybe their GPS ankle bracelet could have some type of alarm that would go off and alert authorities that they are socializing with other offenders.  Also, it is critical for these GPS ankle monitors to actually be monitored.  Sexual offenders are oftentimes above normal in intelligence and reporting in every 30 days is an easy task as they are actively plotting their next victims.

Finally, the women killed were allegedly prostitutes.  It seems that if they were hanging around these types of locations it would have flagged the possibility that they were up to more deviant behavior.  Part of their treatment and ongoing monitoring should be to limit specific high-risk locations.  I would think hanging out around a school or seeking employment around children would be frowned upon.  Southern California officials owes
it to the people they protect to keep a closer eye of registered sexual offenders to prevent these types of horrible situations from happening again.  Hopefully this will be a wakeup call.

  1. It's upsetting when the justice system we put so much faith into to do its job fails us because the case "isn't important enough."

  2. This is really absurd. If they had the GPS then why wasn't more attention brought to the actions of the sex offenders? 4 lives were lost that didn't need to be.
