I think I will just start by saying that I had no idea emotions were ID'd like this. I thought they just had a name and BOOM. there's your emotion...but whatever. Until recently, scientists had only identified six basic human emotions: happy, sad, fearful, angry, surprised, and    disgusted. Now they have discovered 15 more "compound emotions; these emotions are expressed by combining the basic human emotions. The only problem is that none of us, not even scientist do not fully understand our cognitive system on how emotions really work or in other words, the rainbow of expressions that the human brain produces; it is much like using red and blue to produce purple. All of these compounds of emotions are distinguishable from one another, "happily surprised" is very different from "fearfully surprised" which is very different from,  "happily disgusted". All this to say, as the two areas of study mover forward, we will better be able to understand what happens in our brain when we feel an emotion. The newly identified emotions can impact future research on psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia or  PTSD as well as research on development of autism. It could also be used to create better human-computer interaction systems.
So this was interesting to me because I had no idea that emotions were taken to something this extreme, but of course how do we study the brain without emotions? Is is great that we have more of a category of expressions to formulate by but I feel like there are a lot more emotions out there than just 21 but I guess we really need something to base any of our emotions off of. There are probably hundreds of facial expressions, but they are to vague to be called anything, unless you want to categorize an emotion as "sadly confused and disgusted", or something....I don't know...what are ya'll's take on this?

Oh but there's more...http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/04/health/facial-expressions/index.html?hpt=he_c1

  1. I never knew that there were only 6 "real" emotions in the world. People usually say that they have other emotions than just these six, but I guess these new "compound emotions" will help more when scientists are trying to identify emotions.
