Felicia Padilla 5th period

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide. During this horrific genocide, almost a million lives were taken. The Rwandan continue to blame France and french forces for taking a part in the genocide. Many people have spoken out that it is a shame and a mistake that no one helped Rwanda in their time of need. Still, after 20 years, the genocide is a very touchy subject.

The genocide began on April 6, 1994. The genocide began right  after Hutu president Juvenal Habyarimana was killed when his plane was shot down. .At least 800,000 people died.
The memorial began three months ago in small towns and villages and traveled across the African nation. It ended on Monday when the torch arrived at the national genocide memorial.
The flame  will burn for 100 days, the length of time it took government soldiers to end the genocide.
Survivors of the genocide gathered together and shared their memories of the genocide. Many people were screaming and crying. There was medical staff and counselors on site to help those people. It is very hard on the survivors because it causes them to relive a part of their lives that is scary and awful. There were no French officials present.  Even french ambassadors have been asked to stay away from the memorial. The memorial ends on July 4th.
This is incredibly sad and I pray that each and every person affected by this genocide will have a happy rest of their life.
