Boston Marathon security: How can you keep 26.2 miles safe? Ilana Lemack

As the year anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombing yesterday, many people gathered in the sites where the marathon took place. One specific site brought back memories from the attack; suspicious bags near the finish line. The first clue that something was amiss Tuesday came when a police officer spotted a man with a backpack walking barefoot in the rain down Boylston Street. When asked what was in the backpack, the man told the officer it was a rice cooker. After police looked in the bag they arrested the 20 something year old man for disorderly conduct. Police spotted the bags on Boylston Street, not far from where two pressure-cooker bombs exploded killing three people and wounded at least 264 others. Both bags spotted Tuesday were deemed safe, but the man carrying one of the bags has been charged with possessing a hoax device. However with the 26.2 mile Boston Marathon occurring this coming Monday, police are wondering if and how it is possible to guard 26 miles of street.

After reading this article I am curious to see how much security there will be at the Marathon on Monday. I do not know if the man with the backpack was purposely trying to look suspicious or if he's just stupid, but either was it is not smart to be looking suspicious on the anniversary of the bombing in the same location as the bombing. It is good to know that the bags were deemed safe, but hopefully in the future people will be more cautious of their actions.

  1. I agree with you. I am also wondering about the amount of security. I'm hoping there is no foul play to compromise this event.

  2. I do think it is difficult to determine just how much security is necessary versus how much is realistic. It will be interesting to see how the security turns out this year
