Yesterday, Trump announced he wanted to switch from a family-based immigration system to a merit-based immigration system. This plan would prefer high-skilled workers. This would have the US give the same number of green cards a year - about a million. However, the proportion would change. Right now, 12% of green cards are given based on merit, but Trump is trying to make it to 57%. It would factor in age and if a job offer has been given. Trump wants to cut in half the amount of green cards for people with family already in the country. He wants to give priority to spouses and children, rather than parents. He also called for more money towards physical barriers. This is probably going to come up in his re-election campaign.
