Today, Monday 13, 2019, Katelyn Newman, a staff writer for the US News, reported that health care professionals are making a switch in the approach to addiction from condemning addicts to treating them as if they have a disease. According to Joe Polish, an addict who assisted the author in her research, stated, "a lot of addictive traits can be traced back to childhood experiences and trauma." Joe Polish is a marketing entrepreneur who is currently recovering from multiple addictions himself, and sees his addictions along with other's as a way to cope with pain.
Historically, addictive substances have been used by priests in religious ceremonies, healers for medical purposes, and in socially accepted manners, such as nicotine and caffeine. These substances have gradually shifted to be utilized in different manners to mold in society, resulting in social norms that have been both beneficial and harmful.
