President Bouteflika Loses Support in Algeria

On March 18th, the association of the country's doctors known as the Collective of Algerian Medical Residents (CAMRA) has encouraged medical students throughout the country to participate in the protests against the president.  Bouteflika, Algeria's leader, has long been considered out of touch, having been in office for over 20 years with the country, not being seen in public for a while following a stroke a couple of months ago.  Even some of the leading clerics in the country have stated that a change in leadership is necessary to the country's survival.

This reporting was done by reuters, which is an extremely credible source and has very little bias, if any, in their particular style of stories.  I think it is extremely, for the health of a country, for there to be a regular rotation of leaders in a country, to insure the country is led by fresh ideas and collaboration across barriers.  I appreciate how people from all across the spectrum in the country of Algeria acknowledge this necessity, with everyone, from doctors to religious leaders, acknowledge the need for a new leader in the country.

This ongoing event reminds me of the controversy surrounding the run for a third and unprecedented term by Roosevelt, with his decision to attempt to continue his presidency resulting in backlash from people who said that the country was due a new person to lead.  This is like how there is a current, ongoing pushback from Bouteflika's continued stay in office, no matter public opinion, and even in his poor health, much like Roosevelt's deteriorating state due to his polio.
