Faith Wangermann - Beto O'Rourke
Jonathan Martin writes in an article for the New York Times, published on March 18, 2019, about the amount of money Beto O'Rourke raised in the day after announcing his candidacy in the 2020 election. He raised $6.1 million online in the 24 hours after announcing his campaign in a video on Thursday morning. This is higher than the amount Bernie Sanders raised in his first 24 hours at $5.9 million. Beto gained a lot of democratic support during his senatorial run, despite losing narrowly to Ted Cruz. This amount of money gained so quickly is proof of his strong support, and though the amount of the average donation and the number of donors was not released, Beto O'Rourke does not accept money from Political Action Committees. This immense support for a candidate with limited experience in the federal government is similar to many candidacies of the post war years of the previous American wars. War heroes like William Henry Harrison, Eisenhower, and even George Washington, were not necessarily elected based on their political merits, but by being well liked by the people.

I think politics, especially in a time where the mere personality of our president is so despised, are driven by appearances, and Beto is kind of like white Obama. He has similar appeals to liberals and Democrats, but he is still palatable to conservatives.
